STRONGSVILLE, Ohio – The city can now hire new police officers and firefighters up to six months before a position becomes open in the Police and/or Fire departments, under legislation City Council recently approved. By doing so, the roster of patrol officers and firefighters may occasionally and temporarily exceed the maximum numbers allowed by city code. The ordinance will allow the city to train new officers and firefighters in advance of an expected job vacancy instead of afterward. That's important nowadays, city officials said, because the number of applicants to the police and fire departments has significantly dropped in recent years.
